the dish with trish a lifestyle blog the dish with trish a lifestyle blog diy & crafts family fitness food & recipes home & design contact me about me search search for: search type your search keyword, and press enter search for then press enter my last day as a wuber (wife uber) april 12, 2018 pp1976 family 3 comments read more we had both been looking forward to this phase of recovery and the first physical therapy appointment started off with a bang. dave was given a stack of paperwork, mostly full of questionnaires and assessments. what was odd about these questions is that they really applied more to an elderly person or a recovering athlete, than a middle age guy who had an acute injury and surgery. we got a good laugh out of some of them. one was a series where h e had to rate a particular activity from 0 (unable to do) to 4 (no problem doing). the question read “rolling over in bed”. he scoffed, “i can roll over in bed with the best of them”. he scored it only a 3, though, i’m not sure why since he has it mastered. similarly, question #7 asks “how is your overall health right now?” we pause, smile and decide it couldn’t be better. he has no responsibilities. he can’t walk the dogs, can’t stand to do the dishes, he has no free hands because of crutches to carry even a glass of water, mowing the yard is a pipe dream, his wife drives him everywhere and he gets to basically sit around and watch tv all night with his foot elevated. but to answer in good faith, i mean, “have these appointments covered by insurance”, he had to say his health was poor. oh, the irony. ” our appointment quickly went from fun selfies with the “laser” to dave’s comments such as, “this is great. take as long as you need. i have nowhere to be” that sent me over the edge. an instant volcano erupted in me because everyone had somewhere to be and i was in charge of getting them there. as dave relaxed while being massaged and iced, i frantically called the school to change our transportation for the day because there was no way i was making it to carpool. even though the secretary knows me, protocol had to be followed. this means that a polite or even chaotic phone call from me, the mother, held zero weight in changing my kids transportation status. it had to be done by writing, in email. not your ordinary email, that would be too easy, but rather through the cms website, via faculty and staff emails ….which i was kindly told she wouldn’t receive in the next 15 minutes and to copy and paste her email into my private account and send it that way. she would be on the look out. having spotty wifi in the pt office was a pleasure at this point. with 4 minutes until dismissal, i received a confirmation email that my kids would indeed make it on to the bus. thank goodness. that’s when phase 2 started……the text message chain to neighbors making sure someone could get them off the bus. you see, up until that point i had driven him everywhere; to and from work each day, his hair appointments, doctor’s offices, etc. the truth is that it wasn’t really a big deal. we both easily adjusted our days and he was always willing to leave the office early when i was in the area because of kids activities. but after 7 weeks we were both at the end of our rope. he had lost so much control by not being able to drive, which must have sucked, and we both were just ready to get back to normal. needless to say it was a quiet ride back to his office that ended with a sweet comment suggesting he take an uber home that evening because i would be drinking and unable to pick him up. a nice co-worker brought him home that night and he had come to the same conclusion i had…… he would start driving himself to work. i’m glad we were on the same page because my tires squealed out of the driveway at 7:30 the next morning while he was in the shower. freedom!!!!!!! dave is feeling some freedom too. not only driving, but because beer production has picked back up again. the surgeon and sports medicine doctor that have been amazing through all of this jump started the revival. they will each be receiving a keg of our favorite home brew, enjoy by. this is a hobby dave needs for his sanity so i am happy to say we will have 4 or 5 new beers on tap by memorial day. they will include a saison (the fruity frenchman), a german altbier (the krout) and a new england double ipa (boston strong). can you tell how i contribute to the piho brewing??? (other than consumption of course) with only 8 week of school left, and 4 weeks into physical therapy, the pihos are shaping up to have a great summer. many changes come our way this fall and we couldn’t be more excited. stay tuned…….. kiki the cat march 6, 2018 pp1976 family 3 comments read more this is the story about the cat we owned…… overnight. when i shared the story with my mom, i asked if she wanted my version or the truth, which can sometimes get hazy. i was out walking the dogs around 6pm when a young cat came bounding up the hill, around the corner towards us. whether the cat heard me talking to do the dogs, or the jingle of their collars, it was not shy and immediately i knew it had to be a lost pet. doodles can be quite aggressive on his leash, so as soon as i saw the cat was approaching us without caution for the dogs, i turned around and headed home. the story could have ended there, but it didn’t. we have coyotes in our neighborhood and it was just before dusk so i didn’t want to leave the young kitty to fend for itself. i put doodles inside and went back out with smudge. i called all the neighbors in that cul-de-sac and nobody owned or knew of anyone that owned this young kitten. then, i posted on my next-door website and 35 surrounding neighborhoods as well as my personal facebook page and the north carolina charlotte area lost pets facebook page. certainly someone was looking for the sweetheart and i would reunite them quickly. as i walked home, the cat somewhat followed me but at a distance. the turning point was definitely when i went inside and got a saucer of milk……or maybe because i was calling, “here kitty kitty. here kitty kitty” as i lured her to my garage. i texted dave who was upstairs hobbling around with his walker trying to get the kids to bed. he didn’t text back. it must be because his phone is on the fritz. so i called. he actually had received my text but was in no mood to talk to me about this. “how could a cat really have come up to you when you had 2 dogs and followed you home?” (i wisely did not mention the fact that i coaxed the cat to safety with a saucer of milk.) dave was not happy at this point but he is such a cat lover i knew he would never want me to leave it outside overnight. we decided i would put him in a soft travel crate with towels in the garage and by morning the situation would have resolved itself with the cat’s owner contacting me. once i set it up, the cat jumped in and started to purr. he was asleep within an hour. i woke around 2am to check my phone, nothing. when i got up in the morning, i had not heard from one single person about this precious cat. i started to get worried. i couldn’t keep the cat, i’m allergic. and while she and smudge had become fast friends, doodles was having no part of it. overnight, the cat had wiggled its paw between the zippers and gotten free to roam, but came meowing up to me as soon as i opened my door. my children were upset with me during bedtime because i was preoccupied. i couldn’t tell them what i was doing because they would never have gone to sleep. i was taking care of this animal and didn’t have time to lay with them and read stories and i felt terrible about that. when i woke them up in the morning and told them there was a kitten in the garage they could play with until the bus came, they got dressed so quick and inhaled their eggos. the minute they set foot outside, the meows started. the excitement when they heard this was adorable. they didn’t have to search long at
